Director's Newsletter #35 - 18, May 12

Director’s Newsletter #35-18, May 12, 2019 Good afternoon everyone! Allow me an opportunity to wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day! In a program like ours, it’s easy to see that many of our students know they have many moms looking after them. So from all of us, students & staff, enjoy your day!

As a reminder to all parents, AP testing continues this week for some of our students, along with Prom happening this weekend. There are many outside of band activities happening so please plan accordingly. This week’s newsletter will have information on the following items: •Jazz Spring Concert Recap •Band Banquet Recap •Custom Band Top for 2019 Marching Season •BLT Application Interviews/DM Letters of Rec/Band Council Applications •Drum Major Audition Parent Meeting •Spring Concert Jazz Spring Concert Recap Congratulations to our Jazz program on a wonderful 2018/19 school year. Under the outstanding leadership of Mr. Cuellar, our jazz studies program is stronger than ever. For those of you with students who will be in the ensemble next year, as a reminder the All-State Jazz Music will be out this month. Please be sure your student picks up their copy of the music to begin working on their etudes, and as always recommended, find a private lessons teacher for your student to study with. If you have questions regarding anything in our jazz program, please be sure to contact Mr. Cuellar at Jesse.Cuellar@nisd.net. Band Banquet Recap Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s banquet. It was a fun evening filled with great food, awards, and company. Congratulations to all of our parents and students who were recognized for their hard work this year. A special thank you to Ms. Jonnie Tristan for chairing our banquet and working so hard to make Friday a special night. She had a great amount of help from Julia Lira, Adriana Trevino, Sharon Powell, Sarah Phillips, Rebecca Toedt, Stacey Brown, and Mary Beth Bjerken. Thank you all so much for your hard work and time dedicated to the program. Custom Band Top for 2019 Marching Season This coming marching season, the winds and percussion members are having a custom uniform designed for them to fit the theme of the marching show. The pants of the uniforms will be covered however since the tops will be custom fit they will belong to the students. Therefore, students will need to purchase their own top for the coming year. These tops will belong to the students and will be theirs to take home following the season. The cost of the top is $70. Students will be fitted for their top the week of the music camp. The company who is designing the band tops ask that all students have their top paid for by June 1st to begin production so that we can have uniforms in time for the marching season. BLT Application Interviews/DM Letters of Rec/Band Council Applications This week we will begin our interview process for all students who have applied for a non-Drum Major leadership position. These will continue into next week and once we have completed all interviews, our 2019/20 BLT will be decided. Drum Major letters of recommendation are due by Wednesday. Please be sure students hand deliver these or emails them to me that day. As a reminder, Band Council applications are due this Tuesday. Drum Major Audition Parent Meeting On Monday, May 20th we will have a brief meeting for parents and students who are auditioning for Drum Major. The meeting will begin at 6 pm. Please be sure you are in attendance to discuss the procedure for auditions and get any questions you have answered. Spring Concert This Thursday will be our final performance for the 2018/19 bands. The performance will begin at 6 pm and will include all 3 bands, our outstanding soloists' performances, a few awards, and a special honor to our seniors. We hope all of you can attend!
