Directors Newsletter #36, May 26

Hello Subscribers,

I hope you had a chance to attend the A1 Symphonic Band performance at The Tobin Center on Tuesday and the Full Orchestra Concert on Wednesday night. The students and directors enjoyed presenting the last concert of the year to those in attendance. The amount of talent on stage was incredible. One of the highlights at the band concert was performing in the beautiful Tobin Center. I thank YOSA (Youth Orchestra of San Antonio) for the invitation to perform plus the wonderful comments and compliments given to the band from Troy Peters, conductor of YOSA and Andy Post, Winds conductor for YOSA. I thank Kevin Garcia-Hettinger and Anna Osterman for the collaboration between Orchestra, Choir, and Band to give a heartfelt combined performance dedicated to our Military of “Hymn to the Fallen” by John Williams. A HUGE thanks to our students, alumni, and parents for making my “last” three concerts so special and memorable.

This week as we say goodbye to the senior class we welcome the Class of 2022. We will host the Freshman Spring Band Camp Tuesday through Thursday this week from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The BLT will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday for a meeting with Band Staff. The BLT will also meet at 4:15 p.m. every day prior to the start of freshmen camp. At this camp, we teach the new band members to march, handout marching show music, meet the Band Leadership Team, and have a parent meeting for all new students and parents to the band/guard program. The Freshman Parent meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 30 at 7 p.m. in the main band hall. The Band Booster Board and co-chairs should be in attendance to help answer questions about the BBBB, Inc. Don’t forget to wear your Navy and Orange! The Full Percussion and the Color Guard will meet Tuesday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. All students are to wear a white t-shirt, navy blue shorts, have their camel back/water packs, proper footwear, sunglasses, cap, and sun block to all rehearsals. This week we will have record temperatures with a heat index of over 100 degree plus heat. Students are reminded to hydrate throughout the week.

ATTN Parents: All Band and Guard fees are due this week, no exceptions! Parents have received an email to let you know of your students balance. You may pay with cash or check written to BBBB, Inc. Bring the fees to me so I can write a receipt and take you off the “no band” or “no graduation” list.

On Monday, students will be participating at the UIL State Solo and Ensemble contest on the campus of UT Austin Music Building and Connally HS in Pflugerville. Solo events: Antonio Jasiczek flute, Madeline Wood twirling, Ben Walls horn, and Jackson Wood snare drum. Ensemble events: Clarinet Trio of Juan Cantu, Woodwind Trio of Lisa Lou, and Flute Quartet of Shelby Ebner. Students are to find a ride to UT Austin or Pflugerville high schools. Students should have performance times and must have an original score with every measure numbered for the judge to use. Best of luck, state qualifiers!

I hope you had a chance to attend and meet the new head director, Mr. Asgari last Thursday. He is not a stranger to BHS, since he was a percussion tech for us the first four years when we opened our doors in 2008. Mr. Asgari is a wonderful addition to the Brandeis Band Staff and will lead the band and guard to new heights.

A HUGE Thanks to all of our students for performing at such a high level at the Band Spring Concert, Tobin Center, and Full Orchestra Concert. It’s always a pleasure to see how students have progressed throughout the year. One can clearly see this improvement with the Freshman Band, but also with individual students throughout all of the bands. We have very talented students. It was also special to hear the senior send off to the “Stars and Stripes Forever”. Seniors, thank you for all of your hard work and dedication in making the Brandeis Bronco Band a joy to teach. I wish the Class of 2018 the best of luck and success in their future. Thanks for all of your support of “The Spirit of Brandeis” Bronco Band!

Mr. H
